Lang's Fairy Books là tuyển tập 25 cuốn truyện cho thiếu nhi do tác giả Andrew Lang và phu nhân Leonora Blanche Alleyne công bố giai đoạn 1889 - 1913 tại Scotland.
Lịch sử
[sửa | sửa mã nguồn]Thập niên 1880, trong quá trình khảo cứu và san hành các sách Phong tục và huyền thoại (Custom and myth - 1884), Huyền thoại, nghi lễ và tín ngưỡng (Myth, ritual and religion - 1887), tác gia Andrew Lang đã đề xuất việc chia các huyền thoại tự cổ kim mà ông sưu tầm được theo số tập để độc giả nhỏ tuổi dễ nắm bắt. Tuy nhiên ngay sau đó, ông lại quyết định "đánh số" bằng màu để tác phẩm có sức hấp dẫn cao hơn, thay vì chỉ thuần túy mang tính khảo cứu khô khan. Như vậy, trong suốt thời kì 1887 - 1913 đã có chừng 25 cuốn sách được xuất bản, mỗi cuốn lại theo màu nhất định dựa vào chủ đề để độc giả đỡ rối hơn. Mỗi cuốn sách gồm tối thiểu 20 đồng thoại, kèm một số thi phẩm.
Từ thập niên 1940, sau khi ông bà Lang đều đã tạ thế, ở những lần tái bản thì hợp tuyển được đặt nhan đề chung là Đồng thoại muôn màu (Andrew Lang's "coloured" fairy-books, Andrew Lang's fairy-books of many colors). Gồm 798 đoản thiên và 153 thi phẩm, chưa tính những lời tựa và bình chú của tác giả. Đồng thời, có sự minh họa của các tay bút Henry Justice Ford, G. P. Jacomb-Hood, Lancelot Speed và A. Wallis Mills[1].
Vốn dĩ ở ba cuốn đầu, tác giả chỉ thực hiện nhằm tặng gia đình và bằng hữu, ông chỉ tiến hành sưu tầm và giao việc hiệu đính cho vợ - phu nhân Leonora Blanche Alleyne, bà đặt bút danh là Nora[2]. Nhưng kể từ các cuốn sau, bút danh lại đổi thành bà Lang (mrs Lang). Do không phải văn nhân chuyên nghiệp, nên đa phần tác phẩm trong hợp tuyển đều là công sưu tầm và hiệu đính của các tác giả, chứ sự hư cấu gần như không đáng kể.

The first edition consisted of 5,000 copies, which sold for 6 shillings each. The book assembled a wide range of tales, with seven from the Brothers Grimm, five from Madame d'Aulnoy, three from the Arabian Nights, and four Norwegian fairytales, among other sources.[4] The Blue Fairy Book was the first volume in the series, and so it contains some of the best known tales, taken from a variety of sources.

Their continuing popularity, however, demanded subsequent collections. In The Green Fairy Book, the third in the series, Lang has assembled stories from Spanish and Chinese traditions.
