English: Roadkill Muntjac Dead Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi). I came across this on an early morning cycle ride, and by the look of it, it must have been only recently hit by a vehicle, presumably during the night just gone - someone would have found their car had a dented bumper, if not worse damage!
Muntjac were first introduced from their native China to Woburn Park in Bedfordshire in the early 20th century. Subsequent escapes and releases from elsewhere have led to an expansion across much of England and Wales, and they are now relatively common is some parts of the country. They are selective feeders, tending to nibble at nutritious plants, such as herbs, blossoms and shoots, and are considered to be less damaging than other deer, with only minor impact on crops and forestry, except in areas of high population density where some damage might be done to coppice regeneration due to the nibbling of shoots. In fact the British Deer Society suggests that the greatest economic impact they have on humans in the UK is due to vehicle damage!
